Video showing drive-thru liquor shop by Shoprite
We're not sure how this would work out regarding the laws around drinking and driving...
For the alcohol lovers, a drive-thru liquor shop sounds most appealing.
While something like this sounds appealing, we're unsure how the specifics would work. According to the law, several specifications must be met when selling alcohol.
However, while we may have considered a drive-thru liquor shop impossible, a major South African retailer, Shoprite, made it happen. A video of the drive-thru liquor shop in Hammanskraal was first shared on social media in early 2024.
Now, another video has surfaced on social media expressing the love for this conceptual liquor store idea.

Many people were pleasantly surprised by the idea. Some said it was not new, as one was already in Krugersdorp and Rustenberg. But according to the Shoprite media team, the one in Hammanskraal is the only drive-thru liquor shop owned by the Shoprite group.
A spokesperson for Shoprite said: "We acquired the drive-thru LiquorShop in Hammanskraal in 2021, and it is the only one in South Africa that we own and operate. It operates under a retail liquor licence and adheres to standard trading hours."
Not everyone was impressed by the idea and called out the Automobile Association's (AA) bid to enforce 'no drinking and driving', yet this store encourages that mentality. The truth is, there's no surefire way of ensuring people won't just open up their alcohol and get behind the wheel of a car.
Interestingly enough, one person commented, insinuating that this was AI. After the lion in a grocery store AI video, people are very untrusting.
