When you think about South African cuisine, it's not often that the first thing that comes to mind is crocodile meat.
Crocodiles are known for their vicious nature and are popular with reptile lovers. We were surprised to learn they have long been a part of South African culinary tradition.
The Tindlovu Group website shared, "Generations back, people across the continent discovered that crocodile meat was a good source of protein and relatively easy to preserve, especially when smoked or dried. And so, this “wild” meat became part of the African diet, prized not only for its flavour but also for its nutritional value."
Tindlovu offers a unique dining experience for adventurous foodies with their crocodile schnitzel. "It’s commonly sourced from sustainable crocodile farms, ensuring that each bite brings a delicious yet eco-friendly taste of the wild. It’s lean, healthy, and, most importantly, a fun story to share with friends after your safari."
A video shared on social media showed a man's discovery of crocodile meat and, more interestingly, crocodile wors.
The video shows a fridge packed with crocodile meat and crocodile wors. People were surprised despite it being a popular choice of cuisine in parts of South Africa. One person said, "How much per kilo, I don't care about anything else, I'll eat it."
Another wrote, "Crocodile meat is insanely good."

Some weren't as excited to try the meat out, thinking about what it might taste like. According to Tindlovu, the flavour of the meat isn't as "wild" as one might think.
"Crocodile meat is mild and tender, taking on flavours really well, which is why it works so perfectly in a schnitzel. We recommend trying it with a squeeze of lemon or paired with our sides, like a helping of pap or a fresh, colourful salad, for the full experience."
What's even better to learn is that crocodile meat is quite healthy. Not only is it high in protein and low in fat, but it is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
