Wanted Durban North housebreaking suspect on the loose

Officers stationed at Greenwood Park SAPS are searching for an awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from lawful custody, while receiving medical care at a Durban hospital this weekend.

40-year-old Lee Barratt had been consulting with medical staff when he allegedly managed to flee the facility.

Barrat is due to stand trial on three counts of housebreaking in the Greenwood Park area, in Durban North.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says Barrat was being held in connection with a house breaking he allegedly committed years ago.

It is understood Barrat needed medical treatment and was admitted to hospital for burn wounds.

Mbele says he had broken a cell window and set his mattress alight.

Barrat has been described as a tall, thin man and is being profiled for other cases.

Police believe he might be hiding in the Durban North, Greenwood Park, Umbilo or Mandeni areas.
