Emotions high as hundreds gather for Sadia Sukhraj's funeral

She was rushed to hospital, where she later died.

The suspects allegedly forced Shailendra Sukhraj out of his vehicle in Himalaya Drive. They then drove off while his daughter was still in the car.

An exchange of sorts ensued and Sadia sustained a gunshot wound.

The suspects crashed into a truck in Caucasus Street, not far from the scene of the hijacking.

One suspect was found dead near the wreckage, another was arrested, while a third is still at large.

About a thousand people have gathered at the Christian Revival Centre for the funeral.

The hearse carrying little Sadia's body arrived to the tune of 'Amazing Grace' being played on bagpipes. Her father was seated on the front seat of the vehicle and wept.

Her mother followed in another vehicle - she too was overcome with emotion.

KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements MEC, Ravi Pillay is among the mourners at the funeral.

DA leader, Mmusi Maimane and Zwakele Mncwango are also present.

Some of Sadia's school friends are also saying their final goodbyes at the service.

The hijacking has angered the Chatsworth and Shallcross communities. Many residents say the crime rate in the area is escalating.

About a thousand people demonstrated outside Chatsworth SAPS last night.

Police had to fire tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd when tyres were burnt and objects were thrown at the police station.

Officers say about 20 people were arrested on charges of public violence.

Meanwhile, the Minority Front is calling for improved visible policing in communities in an effort to crack down on crime.
