SAPS spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says officers had to use stun grenades to disperse the protestors.
Gwala says the road was barricaded with burning tyres. Some angry community members also hurled objects at the police station.
“Public Order Police used stun grenades to disperse the unruly crowd. Some arrests were made, but the exact number is unknown as they are still being processed,” she said.
The extent of the damage to State owned property is also unknown.
Officers are still at the scene.
The botched hijacking angered many residents who feel crime in the Shallcross and Chatsworth areas is escalating.
