Maya set the previous record in Nazaré, Portugal at 20.7 metres, but has once again smashed it! Her latest record has been validated and is now at 22.4 metres.

Maya says that she is extremely happy that a woman claimed the title this year because she wants to inspire other women and show them that anything is possible.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that Gabeira had a major surfing accident in 2013 that knocked her unconscious in the water, where she was luckily saved by a fellow surfer.

The incident left her with a fibula that was snappes, a herniated disc and an anxiety disorder, but after three surgeries and four years recovery she came back better and braver.
