While the origin of the first-ever pick-up line might be unknown, one thing we do know is that it will probably remain an essential tool in the dating world for many more decades to come.

You might hate them, love them or hate that you love them, but these cliche lines are cliches for a reason.

More often than not they won't work and you'll have to leave your romantic interest in peace or the person might have a laugh, the ice will be broken and you can continue the conversation without having to leave with your tail tucked between your legs.

Either way, they are pretty fun and people have been getting creative with them for some time.

We all know the classics: "Did it hurt? When you fell from heaven?" (This would imply that you are an angel) and "Is it hot in here or is it just you?"

But Twitter user @Mbarleigh_ recently sent out a Tweet, challenging the men of SA to a pick-up line contest.

She also said that the winner would be lucky enough to score a lunch date and so the games began:

Whether or not one of these men successfully scored a lunch date with Mbali, we might never know, but we were definitely entertained (And some people have definitely taken notes).
