Flashy funerals: The new trend in resting in peace
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Dignified send-offs or fancy celebrations? Glamorous funerals are the new way to lay our loved ones to rest.

Funerals are notoriously known as sombre and sad. As families and friends bid their loved one farewell, there's a cloud of emotion as they process the loss.
However, some people believe that funerals should be celebrations, not as a sign of disrespect, but merely to celebrate the life that the person lived. Also, it reminds everyone that life is so unpredictable, you are here today and could be gone tomorrow.
Not to jump on the theme of dramatically morbid, but the script surrounding funerals has shifted significantly recently. Once, funerals were meant to be plain and ordinary, not to attract unwanted attention, and to avoid everything eventful, but now they have become RSVP-worthy.

We've seen several funeral homes getting creative with presenting funeral packages. For many families, a basic funeral policy offers some flowers and a decent send-off, and that's acceptable.
But some need more than that. They search for peace in creating a grand affair for a loved one who has passed on. They feel they must honour their loved ones in extravagant ways because perhaps that fulfils them. Many times, the funeral is more for the living than the dead.

Other videos show how glamorous funerals have become, with expensive and decadent decor. There has been some backlash on social media with some people sharing their distaste.
But, shouldn't that be up to the family? If you have the means to host a flashy funeral, and you feel like that's the type of send-off you want for a loved one who has passed on, that's your right.
While the wedding industry might still be pricey, it seems the funeral industry isn't far off.
