Fourie says the second vehicle then smashed into the back of the wreckage.

"The driver of the first vehicle died at the scene. The motorist from the second vehicle was not hurt," he said.

The accident scene caused major delays in both directions during the morning peak.

Motorists travelling from Umhlanga towards Durban struggled to get past the scene, while rubbernecking on the northbound carriageway saw traffic back up on the N2 all the way to EB Cloete Interchange and onto the N3.

The exact cause of the crash is still unknown.

Meanwhile, three people were killed in a separate incident on the M7 freeway, south if the city, underneath the N2 bridge last night.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says three men, believed to be workers at a security company, died in the crash.

The accident occurred on the Bluff-bound carriageway.

It is understood a number of people had been getting a lift on the back of the bakkie. One of the passengers was flung about 40m from the vehicle.

"Unfortunately the canopy came off and the passengers were ejected. Two people died at the scene before medics arrived. The third critically injured man was treated on scene and placed on a manual ventilator before being rushed to hospital where he later died," said Jamieson.

Several other fatal crashes occurred on the province's roads at the weekend, with multiple fatalities and injuries recorded.
