The crash, involving two trucks, occurred in Richmond Road.

The accident scene caused major traffic delays on the route during the Friday afternoon peak.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson says three people from one of the vehicles had to be cut free from the wreckage.

“The driver sustained major injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing more we could do for him and he was declared dead at the scene,” said Jamieson.

Paramedics worked to stabilise the other two occupants, while firefighters used the jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment extricate them.

A helicopter was dispatched to airlift one of the critically injured passengers through to hospital.

The other occupant of the truck was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

It is still unclear at this stage what caused the crash.

The accident occurred in the same area where some 24 people were killed when an out-of-control truck ploughed through an intersection in 2013 – prompting residents and organisations to call for the complete ban of heavy motor vehicles from the stretch of road.
