Amahle Maliwa was sentenced a short while ago.

Earlier, she confessed to poisoning and strangling 10-year-old best friends, Njabulo Mankayi and Luyanda Msomi to death two years ago.

Their bodies were found several days later.

In handing down sentence, Judge Rashid Vahed told Maliwa that she made a conscious decision to strike back at Njabula's father, who she had been having an affair with, and told her the crime was ghastly and unimaginable.

Vahed said he did not understand how a mother of four could commit such an act.

He described her actions as pure evil.

Vahed said Maliwa had numerous opportunities to show remorse, adding that her tears in the dock today were empty of expression and not genuine.

Earlier, Maliwa took the stand in mitigation of sentence. She apologised for the murders, saying she had decided to be truthful and act responsibly.

The defence argued Maliwa was not sound of mind when she committed the murders, saying that they were crimes of passion after being hurt by her boyfriend.
