Rookaya Dhooma was killed on Thursday night when two suspects stormed the family home.

Her son-in-law Imraan Randeree is receiving treatment in hospital.

Westville CPF vice chairperson, Asad Sayed says Dhooma was buried yesterday.

"She was an elderly woman, what could she have done to armed intruders? This loss of life is really tragic, senseless and unnecessary, considering that they made off with one or two cellphones," he said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says a case of murder, attempted murder and house robbery has been opened.

The family issued a statement after the incident saying Randeree was in a stable condition in ICU.

The suburb, west of Durban, has been hit by a wave of violent crime in the last 18-months.

Gary Mackay was shot dead, also in Duncan Road, while trying to protect his wife and children from intruders in 2016.
