A full eThekwini council meeting is taking place to elect the municipality's new leadership. This after the ANC redeployed all its members serving on the Executive Committee.

The decision saw the axe falling on the head of now former mayor Zandile Gumede.

Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda is expected to be voted in as the new mayor. The ANC announced its support of Kaunda as its mayoral candidate last month.

Former Finance MEC Belinda Scott has been nominated as the ANC's deputy mayor candidate, while former Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi is expected to occupy the Speaker's seat.

Earlier, opposition parities called on City Manager Sipho Nzuza to recuse himself as presiding officer.

Meanwhile, Gumede arrived at the Durban City Hall a short while ago.

Gumede was seen embracing the ANC's nominated leaders.

It was initially thought that she would not be present at today's sitting.

The ANC said its decision to redeploy its EXCO members was based on performance.

Gumede is currently facing corruption-related charges in connection with the 2016 multi-million Rand waste removal tender.

She was granted R50,000 bail and is due back in court early next year.
