The party announced yesterday that after meeting with Durban's former mayor Zandile Gumede, officials had convinced her to step down without further tension.

Gumede, who is facing corruption-related charges, did an about turn last week and withdrew her resignation letter after she was axed.

This led to the postponement of the swearing in of Durban's new mayor and the city's ANC Executive Committee members. Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda has the party's support to occupy the top office at Durban City Hall.

The ANC's Sihle Zikala says eThekwini was in a state of decay under Gumede's leadership.

Senior ANC officials from Luthuli House spent the last two days meeting with provincial leaders and Gumede to resolve the impasse.

ANC deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte says they met with Gumede, adding that she has accepted the decision made by the national officials.

"She has undertaken to work within the council to assist and unite the council. She will also go back onto the ground and work on the unification of the ANC as well," said Duarte.
