Thabo Bester, Magudumana could face heavy sentence - law expert

A legal expert says convicted rapist Thabo Bester and his alleged accomplice, Nandipha Magudumana, face hefty jail sentences for the crimes they allegedly committed after he broke out of prison last year.

Bester and Magudumana were brought back to South Africa on Thursday after their arrests in Tanzania. 

 

The murder convict faked his own death and escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre last year.

Magadumana, who appeared in court on Thursday, faces charges of murder, aiding and abetting an escape, fraud and the violation of dead bodies. 

 

"A lot of the offences they are being charged with carry minimum sentencing which is of 15 years, it comes with the Human Tissues Act where is has obviously manipulated corpse that they brought in," says legal expert Sunil Singh.

"Aiding and abetting the escape from lawful custody that also can carry the minimum sentence. Depending on the judge, it is more than likely is going to be an indictment where the judge is going to look at it and convict them on each and every one of these offences which they committed. 

 

"Each of them carries a minimum sentencing of 15 years. He may very well say they will run individually and consecutively. Added up, it may add up to 100 years in prison."
