Salga: 17 KZN councillors assassinated within ten months
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The South African Local Government Association (Salga) in KZN says 17 councillors have been assassinated in the province during the past 10 months.

The association has been commenting on another spate of killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
In the latest killing, Inkatha Freedom Party councillor Innocent Mkhwanazi was gunned down on Monday in Mtubatuba.
The murder happened just days after the African Christian Democratic Party's John Myaka was shot and killed while delivering a sermon at his home in Umhlathuze.
SALGA's KZN chairperson Thami Ntuli says during the same period, two other councillors took their own lives, while three were involved in accidents.

Ntuli says the government needs to pay more attention to the health and safety of councillors.
"When you look at the period, it means that each and every month, there is a person that is dying in KwaZulu-Natal or if not two councillors.
"That is our concern as Salga. We understand there is a national team which are investigating such cases. We are calling, therefore, for urgency in terms of arresting the perpetrators."
