The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has condemned the killing of one of its Mtubutuba councillors, Innocent Mkhwanazi.

This comes after Mkhwanazi was shot dead near Nordale, in Umtubatuba, on Monday after being ambushed by assailants parked on the roadside.

Two of the councillor's bodyguards and a third person were wounded in the shooting.

In a statement, the party's national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa says this type of violence is a cause of serious concern as we approach the 2024 national elections.

Meanwhile, the DA's provincial leader Francois Rodgers says the provincial government needs to urgently meet with political party leaders in KZN to solve the increase in politically motivated killings.

Rodgers says of extreme concern is that attacks and killings of councillors appear to be more prevalent in municipalities with hung councils or those with unstable coalitions.

"The DA calls on KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and her COGTA MEC, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, to urgently convene a meeting of all political party leaders in the province in order to find viable solutions to the increase in politically-motivated killings."

"For democracy to survive, next years’ elections must be free and fair, with elected office bearers able to perform their duties without intimidation. The DA expects the Premier to take immediate action in implementing the Moerane Commission’s recommendations and for her COGTA MEC to outline steps to be taken by her department within KZN’s conflict-ridden municipalities."

Meanwhile, a statement by SALGA shows that 17 councillors have been assassinated in KZN over the past 10 months.

Just last week also an ACDP councillor pastor John Myaka was shot and killed in Umhlathuze.
