Minimal force used to disperse Chatsworth protesters: KZN police
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police believe there was no use of excessive force in dispersing about a thousand residents who protested at the Chatsworth Police Station over the death Sadia Sukhraj last night.
The 9-year-old girl was shot during a botched hijacking outside her grandparents' house on Himalaya Drive yesterday morning.
She later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Last night, police fired teargas and rubber bullets into the crowd as residents demanded justice for Sadia.
Some residents who were there have told Newswatch officers fired teargas at peaceful protesters.
But KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Jay Naicker says there was unruly behaviour.
Naicker says 20 people have been arrested.
"From the police officers on scene, they indicated that a large number of people were under the influence of alcohol. That could have contributed to the criminality that we saw last night. There are people with ulterior motives, taking the attention away from a family that is greiving," Naicker said.
Sadia's funeral is taking place at the Christian Revival Centre in Chatsworth.
