She was shot during a violent hijacking outside her grandparents' home in Shallcross, south of Durban.

Outraged residents demonstrated outside the police station last night, demanding justice for the little girl. However, the police's Nqobile Gwala says protests became unruly and 20 people were arrested.

"Members of the public order police had to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd and about 20 members were arrested for public violence," Gwala said.

Gwala says residents wanted police to release the hijacking suspect to them.

"They were demanding that the suspect - arrested yesterday by police - to be released to them. We are appealing to community members  - if they want to raise their grievances, they must make sure that they do it in a polite and peaceful manner," Gwala said.

This community member says she was part of peaceful demonstrators near the Chatsworth Police Station when police released tear gas, and fired stun grenades.

"Where we were - it was peaceful and we were chatting amongst each other. We were told that we will wait for 15 minutes for a brigadier to come and address the crowd. To my shock, the police started firing pellets and stun grenades. We started running because we did not know which way to run," Govender said.

Shelley Govender's husband, Renny, suffered injuries to his leg when stun grenades were fired.
