According to police, three cash vans had been travelling together between Nxamalala and Ntolwane this morning when the heist took place.

National police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili says a Mercedes Benz was used to ram one of the vans off the road, causing it to overturn.

"A vehicle belonging to a government department was hijacked and used during the robbery. Shots were apparently fired, but no one was hurt. Two firearms, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash were taken by the suspects before they fled the scene," said Muridili.

Muridili says the gang fled the scene in their own vehicle.

"Police are currently trying to track them down."

The attack comes just days after a security officer was killed and two were wounded in a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Hibberdene on the south coast.

The Hawks arrested six suspects just hours after that robbery on Thursday.
