LISTEN: Dube-Ncube makes history as KZN’s first woman premier

Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been elected as KZN's new premier and has made history as the province's first woman premier.

Dube-Ncube was sworn in at a special sitting in KZN Legislature at the Surchers Auditorium in Mooi River under the Mpofana Municipality on Wednesday. 

She was nominated for the position as well as the DA's Mmabatho Tembe.

Dube-Ncube received 45 votes while Tembe received 11 votes. 

It comes after Sihle Zikalala resigned from the position last week, which was accepted by the ANC.

Acting Judge President Mjabuliseni Isaac Madondo oversaw the process.

Earlier, ANC MPL Super Zuma has nominated Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube as the party's preferred candidate for the position.

"Voting decision will be decided by a majority of votes cast. There will no be an opportunity for nomination for premier of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature," Madondois said.

Zuma responded: "Honourable Acting Judge President, I Bangokwakhe Madesius Zuma hereby nominate Nomusa Dube-Ncube as a candidate for election as premier of KwaZulu-Natal." 

DA leader Francois Rodgers has nominated Mmabatho Tembe for the role. 

"In terms of the spirit of true democracy, I Francois Rodgers of the Democratic Alliance, would like to nominate Honourable Mmabatho Tembe as a candidate for the premier."
