Dube-Ncube addressed hundreds of women at the Esilahla Sports Ground in Richmond in the Midlands on Tuesday as the country marked Women's Day.

"It is for this reason that on Women's Day we call upon the whole of society, not to pay lip service to the noble and just cause of attaining generation equality and the emancipation of women on socio-economic bondage."

She's paid tribute to the freedom stalwarts that fought for women's rights.

"It remains the task for our national democratic revolution to create a united, non-racial, non-sexist, equal and prosperous society. Side-by-side with the people of KwaZulu-Natal, we are on the journey to meet the demands of our mothers of 1954."

Speaking at the same event, President Cyril Ramaphosareflected on the struggles of women in the country.

"There is still a mighty struggle that still needs to be engaged. We still need to uplift the women of our country to a level where they are equal to men."

He says progress has been made for women.

"In the past we did not have the type of developments that we have in the form of the rights and the opportunities that women have today.

"In South Africa today, girls learn alongside boys in our primary and secondary schools and receive an equal education. Half of our members of parliament are now female. When we come to our judges and our magistrates, more and more of them are female."
