"The premier has approached the ANC that it will serve the best interest of the ANC and the province of KwaZulu-Natal that he step down as the premier so that we manage the transition," says ANC's provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo.

"And the PEC has agreed that the premier will resign or voluntarily on his own accord."

Mtolo says three names have been submitted to replace Zikalala in the position.

"We submitted the name of Nomusa Dube-Ncube as our first preferred candidate. The name of Mbali Fraizer, the name of Amanda Bani, tomorrow they are doing to be interviewed."

He says the province should know the name of Zikalala's replacement by Monday.

Zikalala lost the KZN ANC chairmanship to Siboniso Duma at the provincial elective conference held last month.

In a statement, the KZN ANC says Zikalala offered his resignation to the party's Provincial Executive Committee on Thursday.

It says it was accepted with pain and difficulty as Zikalala has done a great job since taking over as premier.

The party has thanked him for his dedication to serving the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

Zikalala will address the media on Friday at 3pm.
