IPID working to identify gunman in #DurbanShooting
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate says it is working to establish whether the Durban metro police officer who died in a shooting in which two others were killed was the gunman.
The shooting took place in the 39-year-old officer's flat on JN Singh Street in the Durban city centre yesterday.
Five other people were hurt while another man escaped unharmed after hiding in the toilet of the flat.
IPID's Moses Dlamini, says more information has emerged and has prompted a preliminary investigation.
"The fact that the firearm was actually thrown out of the first floor window to the ground floor - the allegations are that the police officer also shot himself - it's unusual that the firearm would then be thrown by the shooter himself out of the window," Dlamini said.

Dlamini says a formal investigation will be launched based on the outcome of this probe.
"If it turns out he is involved - IPID will take over the investigation and proceed with it. At this stage, we are not sure whether the police officer is indeed the one who [fired] the shots."
#DurbanCBDShooting IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini says they are also trying to establish whether the 39-year-old Metro Police officer committed suicide. Dlamini has told @ECR_Newswatch that a firearm was thrown out the first floor window and retrieved from the groundfloor.
