The municipality says many scrap yards have become problematic for the city, as some operate illegally, while others are often linked to stolen vehicles for spare parts.

Two scrap yards were closed in Isipingo, south of Durban this week.

The programme forms part of eThekwini's wider regeneration drive, which will also target derelict buildings, illegal operations and environmental hazards.

Municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says car theft syndicates often thrive on illegal scrap yards.

"It is a problem that we are working around the clock to try and clamp down on. We will only succeed in this regard when the public partners with us and reports anything that suggests a business is operating illegally," said Mayisela.

He says the community plays an important role in cracking down on crime.

"Some of these illegal operations and syndicates are operating within our residential areas."
