The City's Msawakhe Mayisela says the closures form part of a drive targeting derelict buildings, illegal operations and connections  -- as well as environmental hazards.

"It is a clear message that we are sending out there to the public. The City will be left with no option but to react aggressively," said Mayisela.

"We are not going to allow instances where illegal trading will just mushroom everywhere. That illicit behaviour to a larger extent is affecting the area. So we have taken a stance."

Last month, the municipality said about 80 dodgy buildings in the Durban CBD will be demolished as part of a rejuvenation project.
