Officer wounded in Newlands attempted hijacking

An off-duty police officer is in hospital after being shot in an alleged attempted hijacking in Newlands East.
Police say a homeowner was was ambushed by two armed men - while signing for a package outside his home.
They led him into the house and assaulted.
Shot were also fired.
The police's Nqobile Gwala says his policeman neighbour rushed over to investigate - but ran into the suspects as they were fleeing.
"The suspect then walked out of the house with the complainant's car keys attempted to hijack a courier vehicle. There was an exchange of gun fire.
Gwala says the police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
"Charges of robbery, attempted murder and assault to cause grievous bodily harm were opened for investigation."
