The Free State man - who asked not to be named - and his friend had parked on Gladys Mazibuko Road, near the racecourse, at around 5pm on Saturday.
He says they returned to their car just after 10pm.
“I think the car guard is the one who came out first and told us to be careful and at the restaurant on the opposite end of the street - they saw smoke and then the manager came out and tried to help,” he says.
They looked under the car and found “a cellphone device attached to a pipe and some sort of electrical device”.
That was then they called the police and the Bomb Squad was dispatched.

The man says it was about three hours before they were able to leave.
“I have a family, I have kids. I could have come with my kids - That’s what really rattles me,” he says, “You start to wonder was this a random event? What are the chances of it happening to the car I was in?”.
Five of these devices have been found planted in various areas of Durban in just three days.
