Chatsworth protests: Residents called for submissions over alleged police brutality

Chatsworth residents have been invited to make submissions to a fact-finding committee that's been established by the Minister of Police to probe allegations of police brutality during a community protest earlier this year.

The protest was over the death of nine-year-old, Sadia Sukhraj who was shot dead in a hijacking in May.

Hundreds of community members marched on the Chatsworth Police Station following Sadia's death with some blaming the police’s inaction about the crime in the area.

The committee's made up of officials from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the Civilian Secretariat for Police and the Department of Community Safety and Liaison.

In it's call for submissions, it says the allegations are that the Chatsworth Police responded violently when the community gathered in front of the station that night.

The gathering was borne out of frustration and the community was seeking answers from senior police officers, it says.

Instead of being given answers, the community was met with stun grenades and rubber bullets.

Some community members were injured and about 20 people were arrested.

Submissions or complaints can be emailed to Mr. Len John on [email protected], by no later than September 14.
