19 councillors killed during current KZN govt’s term of office

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says at least 19 ward councillors have been killed since the current administration came into office in 2021.
Two suspects appeared in court recently for the murder of the ANC's Mabhungu Mkhize from Msunduzi's ward 41.

He was the third councillor killed in northern KZN since June.
The local government is yet to act on the 2018 Moerane Commission's recommendations following its inquiry into political assassinations in the province.

"We are really disturbed with the levels of violence in our province, in particular the assassinations of public representatives,” Dube-Ncube told an anti-crime event in Mayville on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda has confirmed that a third suspect has been arrested in connection with Mkhize's murder.

"The 27-year-old suspect and other two suspects already appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court where they were remanded in custody until 4 September."
