ECR's Top 5: How to become a Durbanite
Updated | By Darren, Keri and Sky
What are some of the things people should have to become a part of Durban?
Every province or city has their own original way of doing things that makes them unique.
Durban is no exception, as there is a certain standard that people born and raised here do expect other people to abide by.

These same people are referred to as 'Durbanites'.
It doesn't matter where you are from, if you are in Durban, then there are certain places, lingo or even information you must know.
Darren, Keri, and Sky have five things that you need to know in order to become a true Durbanite.
1. You need flip flops (slops)
The city is well known for having humid weather. So by having slops, they definitely are the ideal footwear for traveling around the city or going to the beach.
Having these shoes will provide you with comfort and they go with anything you wear - even a suit!

2. People in Durban love sunrises
It's true, there's nothing like watching a sunrise. In Durban, there are tons of great spots along the coastline to watch this beautiful event.
To be a real Durbanite, this is something that you must know and love immediately.

3. Supporting local
All locals here will support each other no matter what. Whether it's a football team (AmaZulu or Maritizburg United), rugby like the Sharks or even restaurants, the people here in KZN generally will support anything as long as it's local.
That is the same for the people in Durban, too. Many Durbanites use locally approved things rather than going to franchise retailers. It's more about the connection than the brand.

4. The school you come from
A lot of Durbanites will ask you what school you attended within the first five minutes of conversation. It's just a local thing that people like to know about a person.
It is said that by telling someone what school you went to, it will automatically reveal the type of person you are. With that being said, Durban, as well as the entire province of KZN, is proud to have a number of top quality schools ranked high in South Africa in both Academics and Sports.

5. Giving a helping hand to anyone
Durbanites are the champions of giving a helping hand. The recent KZN Floods is an example of a tragedy that took place but brought together the city in an amazing way.
There were businesses and organisations who partnered to help people who have lost everything due to the flood. There are individuals who continue to lend a hand every time volunteers are needed to offer assistance.
Giving back and being of services to others - that's what makes a true Durbanite.
