2019 elections expected in May

South Africans are likely to head to the polls in May. President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement during his State of the Nation Address last night.

"I have engaged with the Independent Electoral Commission as well as our various premiers in all the provinces and intended to proclaim the 8th of May 2019 as the date of the elections."

Ramaphosa again urged all eligible voters to make sure they are registered to vote before the date is made official.

"We want to remind all South Africans who have not yet registered to vote that they still have until the proclamation of the election date to register."

The IEC says people who want to register to vote or check and update their addresses and personal details can do so at their local IEC office.

The final registration drive took place last month.

The IEC has been on a massive campaign to ensure as many young South Africans are registered as possible. Campaigns on university and tertiary education campuses
