A 76-year-old woman named Shakuntala Gaikwad fell ill due to COVID-19. Her family took her to the hospital, but due to the horrific situation at hospitals, there were no beds available.

Since she had tested positive for the virus and her condition was deteriorating, her family were uncertain about her ill health. They decided to wait for the ambulance to take her to another hospital. During this time, Shakuntala had fallen unconscious.

The family had assumed that she had passed on and started preparing her body for cremation. Just moments before she was cremated, she woke up, shocked, and started crying.

The family proceeded to take her to the hospital and she is now being treated at the Silver Jubilee Hospital in Baramati village, India.

The COVID-19 infections are still rising in India's second wave of pandemic. "People are struggling to find hospital beds, oxygen and medical treatment as the country attempts to contain the spread of the virus," reports Metro.

Carol Ofori interviewed two women from the heart of the stricken areas a few weeks ago. You can listen to the interviews on her podcast. Remember to stay safe, wear your mask correctly, sanitise and wash your hands regularly, and also maintain a safe distance.
