ATTENTION: Beware of a possible electricity scammer in the Durban North area
A scam regarding your electricity bill in the Durban North area is circulating...
We have all been exposed to some sort of scam in the past, whether it was online or telephonically, some can even say that they have been scammed in person.
So when we were made aware of this scam that has potentially hit in the Durban North area, we thought it was important to share the news with you all so that we could address it appropriately.

Nicole van der Merwe, the owner of a guesthouse in the Durban North area, said that she received a call from a man who claimed to be from the eThekwini Municipality. She said that she immediately knew that this was a scam and wanted to make other residents aware. (North Glen News)
He called on Friday and didn’t give me a name, but said he was calling from the eThekwini Municipality and that a team was on the way to disconnect my electricity because the meter had been tampered with. If I paid R1500 he would stop the team from coming over and I would have electricity for the weekend. They would then come on Monday.
Nicole said that when she wasn't playing into the man's scam he became arrogant and cut the call. She immediately made her security company aware and they did patrol in the area.
Another resident also complained about receiving a similar call.

Many scammers were try anything, so that is why it is so important not to give anyone your banking details or pay anyone for anything that doesn't sound right. If you are not sure then rather end the communication and call the relevant authority so you can find out if this is common practice.
It's like that age old saying, you rather be safe than sorry...
