Durban ‘holiday scam’ couple granted bail

A couple in an apparent local and international holiday scam will be back in court in July.

Thirty-eight-year-old Megasen Chetty and 47-year-old Sarasvathi Pillay were arrested on Friday.
They appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on the same day and were granted bail of R5 000 each.

KwaZulu-Natal police say several fraud cases were opened between February 2018 and October 2019.
Spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says Chetty and Pillay were positively linked to at least 14 incidents in Chatsworth, Phoenix, Malvern, Town Hill, Tongaat and other areas.
"Their modus-operandi was to promise the people to secure a discounted holiday abroad and locally. The total amount of cash that was defrauded is R900 000. The dockets were opened and they were transferred to provincial crime investigations for further investigation.”

Chetty and Pillay were granted bail of R5000 each in court.
They will be back in court in July.
