2015 vs 2025: South Africa’s grocery prices have gone up, up and away!
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
R500 in 2015 could get you almost three times more than it can in 2025! Check out the insane difference.

Yoh! The economy is definitely not economy-ing anymore.
Just 10 years ago, R500 felt like a decent chunk of change.
We were living life, buying things we didn’t need just because we could, and casually tossing extra Ouma Rusks into the trolley for vibes.
Fast forward to 2025 and… well… R500 barely covers your emotions, let alone your groceries.

A recent article by Status Check compared grocery prices from 2015 to 2025, and let’s just say - the glow-up is financial heartbreak in disguise.
We took prices from Pick n Pay’s 2015 catalogue and compared them with their 2025 prices.
In 2015, R500 got you:
200g Nescafé Classic Coffee - R59.90
Albany White Bread - R10.95
1kg Rainbow Simply Chicken Viennas - R45.90
2L Fanta - R13.50
2L Sunflower Oil - R25.80
Ouma Rusks - R24.00 (Darren’s fave, obviously)
2.5kg White Sugar - R23.80
250g Melrose Cheese Spread - R29.90
18-pack 2-ply Toilet Paper - R68.90
2L Liqui-Fruit Juice - R29.95
Total: R332.60
In 2025, the same list now costs:
200g Nescafé Classic Coffee - R144.99
Albany White Bread - R18.99
1kg Rainbow Simply Chicken Viennas - R129.99
2L Fanta - R19.99
2L Sunflower Oil - R89.99
Ouma Rusks - R59.99
2.5kg White Sugar - R65.99
250g Melrose Cheese Spread - R54.99
18-pack 2-ply Toilet Paper - R169.99
2L Liqui-Fruit Juice - R68.99
Total: R823.90
Ten years ago, you could buy all that twice… and still have enough left over for a cheeky McChicken meal.
In 2015, you were ballin’. In 2025, you’re budgeting toilet paper squares like it’s a survival game.
We asked KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) what’s something they love but can’t afford anymore. This is how that went:
Life in KZN is wild and expensive.
However, KZN is also quite accident prone. Check out some of the most ridiculous ways KZN listeners injured themselves.
