Viral 'white sock challenge' hits South African streets

The 'white sock challenge' in South Africa was bound to hit the streets, and what do you think the verdict was?

Social media comes with a constant stream of new challenges and trends. Some involve dances, acts of kindness, spending habits, and more. But one challenge that intrigued people was the 'white sock challenge'.

This trend originated in testing the cleanliness of people's homes and was later transferred to testing the streets.

Content creator Jimbo.h began doing the white sock challenge in different countries, from Dubai in the UAE to the streets of Japan and London. He gained popularity online by walking around these places with a new pair of white socks and then showing how dirty the socks were at the end of his day.

His white sock test videos garnered over 20 million views, which indicates that people are keen to see how dirty or clean the streets of some of the world's most famous cities are.

Cue in Tim Morrel, a South African content creator based in Stellenbosch. Morrel has a way of creating content that grabs people's attention. He went viral last year for starting a concert in his lecture. He also did a video testing what a car guard would do if someone attempted to steal his car.

This time, Morrel decided to try the white sock challenge on the streets of Stellenbosch.

Things got real when he was almost mugged at the taxi rank. It was interesting to note what he had to say about the budget that the government sets aside for cleaning our streets. Either people are not doing their jobs, or as a country, we need more lessons on how to keep our cities clean.

Here's what people had to say in the comments.

  • "The real test was to see if Vanish would clean it."
  • "Why you throwing the socks away. Mom coulda washed them... Or you."
  • "Not me and my OCD trying to breathe through the phone screen, anticipating the end results of the socks."
  • "Dawg I saw you walking and was so confused."
  • "Bro became a walking health hazard."
