Public restrooms can be a menace to use, could these cardboard urination devices be the answer?

Women often face challenges when they are out in public and want to use the restroom. It is something that usually causes some women distress.

Not to mention the risk of contracting a urinary infection due to unclean facilities. You could always turn to the traditional squatting approach, but not everyone is comfortable doing this, and it can get messy if you don't know what you are doing.

A video from a lifestyle and food social media account, Unstumbled, based in India, enlightened us to a urination device that could be the answer to many women's toilet dilemmas.

However, the video opened up many questions about using a disposable device and whether it's safe to urinate while standing for females.

Social media users had many questions: Are these Female Urination Devices (FUDs) environmentally friendly? Is it safe for women to pee while standing? Is it feasible?

These disposable urination devices aren't just for daily use when nature calls, but also appeal to travellers, hikers, concert-goers, etc.

If you're wondering whether these FUDs are biodegradable, the answer is yes, but it depends on the FUD used. Some can be flushed down the toilet, but others (like the one in the video) must be disposed of in the bin.

A pelvic floor physical therapist shared that females are not designed to pee while standing up, so this device, while handy in some situations, may not be helping you empty your bladder.

The feasibility of FUDS depends on where and which device you choose.

Reusable FUDs, which can be washed, sanitised, and reused, have a one-off cost. There's one on Shein for R14. Cardboard or biodegradable ones can be pricey. For instance, a pack of 20 from Takealot retails for R316.
