Three things you can do in support of World Hunger Month

World Hunger Day is on 28 May 2025, and we are highlighting ways you can pay it forward and help with a global problem - food insecurity.

Mother Teresa said, "If you can't feed a hundred people, then just feed one."

This quote has marked history in astounding ways. It has motivated people to do their part in paying it forward and helping alleviate a worldwide problem: hunger.

May is World Hunger Month, a month that is dedicated to fighting hunger and food insecurity.

We also celebrate World Hunger Day on 28 May 2025, and if you are willing and able, you can play your part by helping feed just one person

Here are three ideas on how to help feed someone who is hungry.

1. Participate in the Food Lover's Market initiative 'FoodForward SA'

Food Lover's Market is helping to end world hunger by raising eight million meals for vulnerable South Africans.

"Shoppers are encouraged to drive the number to 8 million by pledging their support at till points, with a mere 50 cents buying a meal."

This is incredible because most people can spare at least a 50c.

The retailer will match the number of meals pledged by customers. You can visit your Food Lover's Market and ask about the feeding scheme.

2. Sunrise Chip 'n Ranch feeding scheme

Sunrise Chip 'n Ranch, established in 1991, has long been known to those around KZN as Johnny's Rotis. It has a feeding scheme directed at groups in need. For R1000.00, you can purchase 100 bunny chows or curry with rice.

There are four different vegetarian options: moon dhall bunnies (R10), mixed veg bunnies (R12), sugar beans bunnies (R15), and vegetarian biryani (R20). The costs differ based on what you order.

To learn more, visit them at 93 Sparks Road, Overport, or call 031 209 2020.

3. Make a sandwich

If you cannot contribute to a feeding scheme, there is always another way. When making your lunch in the morning, pack an extra sandwich with a fruit and give it to someone who is hungry.

It doesn't take much to help someone in a vulnerable situation. You don't have to be rich to help someone in need;all it takes is a will to help.
