KZN couple offers to drive less fortunate learners to matric dance

"We don’t have a fancy car, but we want to help and give back to society." - Natalie Anne Pillay

Natalie Anne Pillay and her husband, Kaylin Vadiveloo, were watching a Facebook live video of a Chatsworth school's prom dance when they began reminiscing about their school years.

Both were raised by single mothers, so they connected on being raised by strong women and still enjoying a comfortable life. Pillay shared that she didn't get to go to a matric dance or prom.

"A single mum raised me; my parents separated when I was six-years-old. We moved to Chatsworth in 2010, and my mum tried her best to give us a comfortable life. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford prom or debs in my senior year, nor did my school offer a debs or prom as it was in a low-class area," she says.

Their experiences got them thinking about the matric learners who don't have the means to experience the whole soiree that comes with the matric dance.

Vadiveloo lost his father at a young age and also came from humble beginnings. Everything the couple has today is due to their sheer perseverance and determination in working hard and staying focused on their goals.

Pillay said that while she has a vehicle, it is not as fancy as her husband's. Vadiveloo works in fleet control, while Pillay is a service station manager. Vadiveloo recently purchased a Golf 7.5 GTI, and they thought it would be nice to offer a free ride to matric learners in the Chatsworth area, who cannot afford a nice ride to their matric dance.

In addition, they have extended this offer of a complimentary chauffeur service to kids who come from a single-parent home, and can't afford to hire a vehicle for their matric dance.

The offer is subject to availability and includes a drop-off in style service for a matric dance couple accompanied by a guardian or parent.

Pillay and Vadiveloo consider this their way of paying it forward. They want to give another child an opportunity that they didn't have when they were growing up.

This act of kindness not only gives the community hope for togetherness but also motivates kids to give back when they can one day.

If your child lives in the Chatsworth area and would like to be dropped at their school matric dance with a Golf 7.5 GTI, then you can contact Natalie at [email protected]
