Durban Girls College break in their Matric dance shoes

A lady's number one rule should be to always break in your dancing shoes...

It's Matric dance season, and for some that means putting the final touches on dress alterations, deciding on hair and makeup looks, and even breaking in those new shoes so you can comfortably dance the night away.

While we understand the rules around Matric dances have evolved, with people focusing a lot of their energies on making a grand entrance, some things remain unchanged.

One of them being the practice of the evening's formalities. Most schools host a rehearsal for their matric dance itinerary to prepare learners for the night.

But like many things, we rarely see the behind-the-scenes of the event's planning. Well, except now.

Durban Girls' College was established in 1877 and is considered a world-class school in South Africa. The school has a strong sense of heritage built into its education system that promises to provide young women with quality education that spans generations.

A video shared by the school on its social media caught our attention. It featured the matriculants parading around the school grounds in their matric dance shoes.

The specifics of any event make it stand out, and they say you never truly understand a person until you've walked in their shoes. Therefore, it only seemed fitting for them to practice walking in shoes representing  a different stage of their school journey.

Plus, practice makes perfect, right? Walking in heels is a skill that few people can master.

Many people supported the idea of having a rehearsal in heels, with many saying universities should do the same before graduation season. Here's what some had to say:

  • "Universities should do this before grad, because Wow."
  • "This is a good idea; they should also do this with graduations because people are suffering."
  • "This is very important. I also bought my daughter high-heeled shoes to practice walking for Matric Dance since I knew she would struggle if she only started wearing them on the day of the Matric Dance."
  • "Smart Girls get that practice in."
  • "Why didn’t we think of this? We all took our shoes off."
  • "Absolutely love this, kudos to the school."
  • "I love the concept, makes sense."

The girls transformed into princesses as they celebrated their Matric dance this week. The practice did them all good as they walked in with their escorts, however it was evident that some were still concerned that they would trip as they nervously looked down whilst walking the red carpet.
