#ZolileKhumalo ‘killer’ wants bail
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The man accused of the murder of 21-year-old Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student Zolile Khumalo, says he will apply for bail.
Twenty-three-year-old Thabani Mzolo made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this morning.
It is alleged that Mzolo shot Khumalo - who was a first year quantity surveying student - in full view of her roommate, at the Umlazi university’s off-campus Lonsdale residence in the Durban CBD.
Mzolo then also apparently made a veiled confession to the murder, on Facebook.
He was found and arrested in Khumalo’s room.
Mzolo made his third appearance in court today, during which his attorney, Charl Claasen, informed the magistrate of his client's wishes to apply for bail.
State prosecutor Calvin Govender says that the State will argue Khumalo’s murder was premeditated and that Mzolo shot her twice before kicking her, as she lay dying on the ground.
Govender also says the State will strongly oppose bail.
The case has been adjourned to next month, for a formal bail application.
On his way back to the grills, Mzolo today picked up his middle finger and showed it to a packed gallery.
Those in attendance appeared shocked.
The family has described Khumalo as a bubbly, smart young woman.
Meanwhile, the DA Youth in KZN says it will be launching a safety petition on all of the province's university campuses, calling for management to prioritize the safety of students, staff and infrastructure on all campuses and in residences.
Read here how MUT students were shocked at Mzolo's antics in court previously.
