Zandile Gumede's election a sign of defiance - analyst

Zandile Gumede's election as eThekwini regional chairperson can be seen as a sign of defiance.
That's the view of political analyst Levi Ndou.
The former eThekwini mayor won the race in Durban on Sunday at the conclusion of the regional elective conference.

She was elected despite her going on trial in a few weeks to answer to corruption accusations.
Ndou says this does not bode well for the ANC’s renewal process, which has been strongly advocated by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

"If you know that you are an accused person and the ANC is on the path to regain the trust of the electorate and you are accused of corruption and you still stand, it is a clear indication that not only Zandile Gumede but some within the ANC feel that even when you are tainted as an individual, you can still stand for leadership positions."
