Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The ANC has voted Zandile Gumede in as its new chairperson
of the eThekwini region.

eThekwini's corruption accused former mayor was elected during the party's regional conference in Durban, after a heated contest with municipal speaker Thabani Nyawose.
Gumede obtained 210 votes and Nyawose got 181 votes.
Gumede's win was sealed when Thembo Ntuli, who supported her, was elected her deputy.
Musa Nciki is the new regional secretary and Nkosenhle Madlala his deputy.

The position of treasurer belongs to Zoe Shabalala - who along with Gumede were not able to attend the conference in person due to the ANC's step-aside rule.
They're both facing criminal charges in the multi-million-rand Durban Solid Waste tender fraud case.
They will only be able to take up their ANC duties when their court case wraps up.
