WEATHER WARNING: KZN braces for severe storm activity

The South African Weather Service is warning of severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours in parts of KwaZulu-Natal this afternoon -- and into tonight.

Forecasters say areas in the province's south west and Drakensberg areas can also expect strong winds and some hail.

The weather service's Stacy Colborne says parts of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands could also be affected.

"The main areas affected by the storm activity will be Giants Castle, Underberg, Royal Natal, Ladysmith and Van Reenens. [The storm could] move as far as Estcourt, Mooi River and it might reach Howick -- but it won't reach the coastline today," said Colborne.

Colborne says the storm warning is only in place for today.

She says some rain is likely in western parts of the province for the remainder of the week, but most of KwaZulu-Natal can expect warm to hot conditions going forward.

"For the rest of this week, the majority of the rainfall should be over the western parts of KZN, which is the area getting the storm today. Most of the week should be warm and hot over most parts of KZN."
