He was arrested about two weeks ago after the girl told a neighbour about the abuse.

The man is facing a number of charges, including sexual grooming, rape, exposing the child to pornography and sexual assault.

He made his second appearance in the Verulam Magistrates Court earlier.

The man limped into court again, appearing to be in pain when was asked to sit and stand in the dock.

Community members shouted at him that what he had allegedly done to the little girl was far worse and that they feel nothing for him.

Legal aid attorney, Mondli Mthethwa told the court that his client would be applying for bail and wants a medical report to assist his application.

Mthethwa said the manner in which the man was arrested would be at the forefront of their argument.

He said cases have also been opened against those who allegedly assaulted the accused at the Verulam and Phoenix police stations.

The accused, who claims to be diabetic, says he has not received adequate medical care.

Chief magistrate, Irfaan Khalil postponed the matter until early next month for a formal bail application.
