Verulam rape suspect faces sexual assault, grooming charges
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
A Verulam man has made his first appearance in court for allegedly repeatedly raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter.
The 43-year-old suspect also stands accused of keeping the girl captive for several months.
It’s understood a neighbour raised the alarm earlier this week - after the child told her what was happening.
The suspect was later assaulted by community members.
The accused in this case is facing a raft of charges - including raping the child, grooming her, exposing her to pornography and sexually assaulting her.
He hobbled into the dock this afternoon. When asked to stand during proceedings, he said he couldn't.
His legal aid lawyer told the court that his client had suffered injuries to his eyes, ears, head and ribs during the alleged assault.
The case was adjourned to later this month for a medical report - detailing his injuries - to be obtained in order to facilitate his transfer to Westville prison.
He is currently being remanded in custody in the local police cells.
Meanwhile, the child is being kept in a place of safety - and is also receiving counselling.
