Some residents of Verulam, north of Durban are still gathering outside the house where a young girl was allegedly raped by her stepfather.

The community has been left shocked by the allegations after the 10-year-old girl told a neighbour she had been abused.

There are also claims the child was being kept captive in a room at the house, after her mother died a few years ago.

The windows to a small face brick room with a tin roof have been covered with old newspapers, seemingly to prevent people from seeing inside.

Neighbours believe the little girl was kept captive inside the room and raped repeatedly by her stepfather.

The door to the room, which is no more than about two metres in length, locks with a padlock from the outside.

Empty alcohol bottles and rubbish can be seen lying strewn across the floor.

Angry residents say police have already removed pornography and other adult items from the scene.

They have told Newswatch they hardly ever saw the little girl, but when they did, she was beautiful and always pleasant.

The suspect was assaulted by community members after the allegations first emerged.

The 43-year-old is due in court on a charge of rape tomorrow
