They were at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when the 43-year-old made his first appearance.

The man, who can't be named to protect the child's identity, will remain in custody at the Verulam Police Station, until his day in court again, later this month.

The State's trying to obtain a medical report detailing the injuries he says he suffered at the hands of angry community members earlier in the week.

Shehana Kajee, who's with the DA's Women's Network in KZN, was also in court.

"The man is complaining about his injuries and everything else. We don't condone violence against perpetrators. We believe that justice must take its course. However, if you look at his size and think of a 10-year-old girl - it really does upset one to think that huge person was hurting that child while he is complaining about his aches and pains," Kajee said.

Lorraine Govender - of Tongaat-based organisation 'Men Against Rape' - says if justice isn't served, the community will see to it that it is.
