UKZN classes suspended following violent student protests

Classes at the UKZN Edgewood campus have been suspended for the day.
It follows violent protests there this morning.
Some students say they arrived at the campus this morning to register following Minister Blaze Nzimande's announcement that all NSFAS students with debt must be registered.
But they say they were still not allowed to register.
They went on the rampage - and tried to remove dustbins from one of the buildings.
MI7 officers sprung into action and used rubber bullets to disperse them.
The group made their way to a field where there was a showdown between them and riot officers.

UKZN Dean, Thabo Msibi tried to calm the situation down - asking the students to stop - but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
Later, police fired stun grenades when students tried to disrupt traffic outside the university.
